Why Marine Metals Need Extra Care in Cartagena

Areas and Components We Can Protect

The exact scope is defined after inspection and may include more than the engine room, depending on access and the boat's condition.

Engine Room

Engines, exhaust elbows, mounts, metal hose fittings, electrical panels and exposed steel or aluminum surfaces in the propulsion compartment.

Shaft and Propeller

The propulsion shaft, stern gear, shaft seal and propeller are checked for galvanic exposure and coating or passivation needs. Submerged work normally requires a haul-out.

Sacrificial Anode System

Inspection of condition, placement and compatibility of zinc or aluminum anodes. Replacement is recommended when the inspection shows it is needed.

Rudder and Steering Hardware

Rudders, steering hardware and fittings are checked for visible corrosion, coating damage and areas where dissimilar metals meet.

Exterior Metalwork

Inspection and Diagnosis

Marine-Safe Degreasing

Oil, grease, fuel residue and surface contaminants are removed with products compatible with the work area. Clean preparation is essential for coating adhesion.

Mechanical Rust Removal

Active corrosion and loose coatings are removed with suitable hand or power tools. The level of surface preparation is set according to the selected coating system and safe access.

Rust Conversion Where Appropriate

A compatible rust converter may be used on residual oxidation when the substrate and coating specification call for it. It is not applied as a substitute for proper preparation.

Marine Anti-Corrosion Primer

A compatible marine primer is applied to the prepared metal. Product selection depends on the substrate, operating temperature, exposure and finish system.

Protective Topcoat System
