What Is Marine Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid protection system applied to a properly cleaned and prepared surface. Once cured according to the product instructions, it adds hydrophobic behavior and can make routine salt and dirt removal easier.

  • Hydrophobic Finish

Helps water bead and reduces the adhesion of salt and common surface contaminants.

  • Surface Protection

Adds a sacrificial coating layer, but does not make the surface scratch-proof or replace impact protection.

  • Product-Specific Bonding

Preparation, cure time and compatibility are defined for the selected product and existing finish.

Easier Decontamination

A compatible coating can make routine salt and grime removal easier. Product limits and approved cleaners are stated in the care instructions.

Gloss and Finish

Coating can enhance the gloss of a well-prepared surface. The final result depends primarily on the condition and correction of the underlying paint or gelcoat.

Practical Maintenance

Hydrophobic behavior can reduce contaminant adhesion, while regular gentle washing and periodic inspection remain necessary in Cartagena's marine environment.

Application Process

1

Technical Wash and Decontamination

Salt, mineral deposits, organic residue and other visible contaminants are removed with products compatible with the existing finish and selected coating system.

Estimated stage: 4–6 hours, depending on size and condition

2

Surface Correction When Required

Polishing may be recommended to address oxidation and correctable surface defects before coating. Severely deteriorated gelcoat or paint may require a different repair or refinishing service.

Estimated stage: confirmed after surface inspection

3

Coating Application

The selected ceramic product is applied in controlled sections and layers, following its specified flash, leveling and cure times.

Estimated stage: depends on product, area and number of layers

4

Curing and Final Inspection

The coating is allowed to cure under suitable conditions. We inspect uniformity, level the finish where the product requires it and document the completed scope.

Estimated stage: determined by product cure requirements

5

Care Instructions

You receive the written first-wash window, compatible cleaning products, inspection guidance and any maintenance steps required by the selected system.

Handover: written care guide and service record

Important: Initial cure and first-wash times vary by product and ambient conditions. We provide the exact written restrictions for the selected system at handover.

Expected Performance and Written Coverage

Surface Preparation

First step: inspect and prepare the substrate

Coating performance begins with compatible, stable paint or gelcoat. Oxidation, defects and contamination are addressed before application within the approved scope.

KEY FACTOR

Selected Product

Defined in writing: product, layers and cure

We match the coating system to the surface, exposure and desired maintenance plan. Expected durability follows the product data and the conditions in the written quote.

Use and Maintenance

Ongoing care: compatible washing and inspection

Sun exposure, salt, washing methods, storage and maintenance all affect performance. No single lifespan applies to every vessel.

Written Scope and Coverage

  • Selected product and covered areas identified before work begins
  • Preparation and application steps documented in the approved scope
  • Care and inspection requirements provided at handover
  • Any workmanship or manufacturer coverage stated with its conditions in the written quote

Maintenance Plan

📅 Routine Wash

  • • Gentle wash with a product approved for the coating
  • • Soft microfiber drying methods
  • • Prompt removal of salt and visible contamination

🔄 Periodic Condition Check

  • • Visual review of hydrophobic behavior
  • • Cleaning of high-exposure salt areas
  • • Assessment of any areas needing attention

Professional Service Review

  • • Inspection against the written care plan
  • • Compatible maintenance treatment when indicated
  • • Quote for correction or touch-up if needed

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Know Before Coating Your Boat

How long does marine ceramic coating last in Cartagena?
Expected durability depends on the selected product, surface preparation, exposure, washing practices and maintenance. We state the product and applicable coverage in the written quote instead of promising one fixed lifespan for every vessel.
Does ceramic coating replace gelcoat polishing?
No. Polishing corrects oxidation and surface defects when the gelcoat condition allows it. Ceramic coating protects the prepared finish; it does not repair damaged or severely deteriorated gelcoat.
Does ceramic coating help protect against salt and Caribbean sun exposure?
A suitable coating can add a hydrophobic, easier-to-clean barrier that helps reduce contaminant adhesion. It does not make the surface maintenance-free or eliminate the need for regular salt removal and inspection.
How long does ceramic coating application take on a yacht?
Timing depends on vessel size, access, surface condition, correction work, the selected product and its curing requirements. We confirm the estimated schedule after inspection.
Does marine ceramic coating require special maintenance?
Yes. Regular salt removal with compatible products, gentle wash methods and periodic inspection help preserve performance. The maintenance plan follows the selected product's written instructions.
Is ceramic coating compatible with PPF?
Some coatings are compatible with specific paint-protection films, but compatibility must be checked with both product manufacturers before application. We define the approved combination in the quote.
